Dr. Vera Packard, Executive Director
Dr. Vera Packard is the executive director of the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation. She’s originally from Brazil. She earned her Medical Degree in Medicine in Brazil, and specialized in breast disease, particularly in breast cancer in London, UK. She worked in private practice in addition to the University Hospital for 20 years. Vera has a deep commitment to women’s health issues which inspired her to found a non-profit organization devoted to breast cancer awareness in 1997.
Vera believes in communities coming together helping each other. She has always been inspired by her experience as an exchange student in Washington State in 1977. She has served as president of her former Rotary club in Brazil and was a leader in the medical community in Natal, Brazil. She is also a board member of Wardrobe for Opportunity, an organization that helps men and women find a job, keep a job and build a career. Vera recently was recognized as one of the 100 Women of Influence by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and Outstanding Business Woman by ABWA, American Business Women’s Association, Bay Area Council.
Vera is married to Mark and has two children, Tiago and Maria Clara. She resides in Livermore with her family and their beautiful dog Nano.
Karen Jackson, Development Director
As Development Director, Karen works with the community on fundraising, event co-ordination and donor outreach. She brings over 35 years of Sales, Marketing and Management experience, including expertise in wholesale and retail markets, and is an active member of AFP Silicon Valley (Association of Fundraising Professionals). Karen is also a volunteer and event committee member for Community Solutions, a South Bay non-profit human services organization and a volunteer and event committee member for Notre Dame High School in San Jose. She has also worked in conjunction with the executive director of the Morgan Hill Downtown Association as a liaison between business owners, local government and the association to help re-invigorate the downtown area. When Karen is not working passionately for HERS Breast Cancer Foundation or volunteering, she spends many hours trying to improve her golf game.
Karen lives in Morgan Hill with her husband Roy. She is the proud mother of two sons, Christopher and Patrick, and has two beautiful grandchildren, Tyler and Paige.
Chris Hubbard, Program Director
As Program Director, Chris manages the day-to-day operations of our programs at both the Fremont and Stanford locations. She states her purpose is to love, learn and serve. Prior to accepting the position of Program Director for the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, Chris was the Care Consultant for Anita International, a major manufacturer of post-mastectomy products, covering the states of California, Oregon and Washington. In addition, Chris has given of her time and expertise to numerous charitable and cancer related organizations for decades. A breast cancer survivor since 1995, she has pledged herself to supporting those with similar diagnosis. Chris established an American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery Program and the first Relay for Life on the island of Kauai, winning the Terese Lasser Award. She also worked for two years at the American Cancer Society in Florida where she was responsible for staffing and implementing all of the patient services programs in two counties.
Chris has a BA in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and a Master’s Degree in Spiritual Psychology. She developed the innovative “Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard” workshops, which she has presented to hospital support groups and breast cancer events.
Chris has been married to Barry for 22 years and they have two grown sons, Michael and Keegan. She is also the proud grandmother to granddaughter, Insley. Chris’ favorite saying is, “Life is too short to be unhappy; humor is essential. There are always options and opportunities for growth in every situation.”
